A Virtual Reality Halloween: Intro to VR Development with Unity (LA)

Love the Halloween season? We do too. Come learn how to build your own highly-immersive VR haunted house, a truly spooky VR experience. In two evenings, you will learn how to create high-end virtual reality experiences on the Unity game engine, and in particular, the techniques used to make your users jump! We'll start by trying out some of the top horror games on the market, and then dive into the reeds with our expert instructors, Tiffany Raber and Darius Clarke.

Prerequisites

  • A computer with Unity installed. Can be any laptop, does not need to be VR-ready. Unity is a free download.
  • If you've never programmed or used Unity before, you should spend a few hours reviewing Unity by completing the Roll-A-Ball tutorial on youtube.

  • 6:00pm: Arrive, network, and get to know yoru fellow classmates! Come a little early so you can try out a few of our VR Halloween demos.
  • 6:30pm: Learn about the VR industry and how VR is used to create compelling and immersive experiences.
  • 7:00pm: Intro to the VR Indstury: history, design constraints, how VR works.
  • 8:00pm: Intro to Unity | Building your first VR experience
  • 9:30pm: We're done for the night! Review the exta-learning material and get ready for day #2 on Wednesday!
  • Wednesday, October 25th (6:00pm-9:30pm)
  • 6:00pm: Arrive before we kick off the instruction to try a few more VR experiences. The best way to learn about VR is by trying VR!
  • 6:30pm: Start working on your house, learning how to add creepy audio, textures, and lighting.
  • 9:30pm: We're done for the night! Review the exta-learning material and get ready for day #3 tomorrow!
  • Thursday, October 26th (6:00pm-9:30pm)
  • 6:00pm: Arrive before we kick off the instruction to try a few more VR experiences. The best way to learn about VR is by trying VR!
  • 6:30pm: Continue working on your house, adding new lighting and spooky effects.
  • 8:30pm: Polish and fine-tune before the demos
  • 9:00pm: Demo time! Let's jump into each other's Halloween worlds.

Meet Your Instructors


Tiffany Raber

Tiffany Raber is a Unity developer, 3D asset creator/designer, and biomedical illustrator. A recent graduate from the Biomedical Visualization Graduate Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Tiffany grew a passion for interactive medical education/simulation techniques in the AR/VR space. She believes that the advancement of MedVR will directly impact and transform the field, improving patient experience, surgical training, science education, and overall user health. Currently, Tiffany is a Visiting Research Assistant, working in modeling and simulation in VR, at The U.S. Army Research Laboratory West, located at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies.

Darius Clarke

Darius Clarke is an Software Programmer and High School Software Development Teacher. He created a simulation for a university research project that allowed high school students to explore and compare 3D paths of simulated paper airplanes. He also supports the Serious Games movement, helping with conferences. Recently he has been exploring Virtual Reality's possibility for not just being "fantasy vision" but enabling its "X-ray vision" power to help our youth see the invisible forces that exist around us, continually shaping and reshaping their lives and ours.
